It may come as something of a shock to the European industry, which is stuck at home, watching films on computer and TV screens, that the 42nd Cairo International Film Festival held a physical edition. Cinemas in Egypt are open on a daily basis and are operating at 50% capacity, with all necessary security measures in place. One of the biggest film gatherings in Africa, as usual, had many European elements in its programme, including The Father [+lee también:

), who wrote the script, received a Lifetime Achievement Award. British thesp Rufus Sewell was a special guest and gave a master class to the Cairo audience.

The grand prix of the festival, the Golden Pyramid, went to the British flick Limbo [+lee también:

by Ben Sharrock, which screened at the San Sebastián Film Festival earlier this year. The film, described by Cineuropa as an “incisive satire on British attitudes to male refugees told in an elegiac, deadpan style”, also got the gong for Best Artistic Contribution and a FIPRESCI Award. The international jury, headed up by Russian maestro Alexander Sokurov, also praised Conference [+lee también:

came out on top in the Horizons of New Arab Cinema Competition, and Jing Wang, with his The Best Is Yet to Come, snatched the Best Film Award in the International Critics’ Week Competition. The Egyptian gathering wrapped on 10 December.
