The Trieste Science+Fiction Festival has now presented the full programme for its sidebar event dedicated to film industry professionals, the Fantastic Film Forum. The 2020 edition won’t be unfolding in person as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, but organisers are more than making up for this physical absence by greatly enhancing the offering, which has never looked so rich and varied. Indeed, the cinema programme has been increased to cover a 5-day period - 30 October to 3 November – and boasts a jam-packed schedule of specialist meetings, networking events and high-level, professional workshops.

As has been the case in previous years, the 2020 edition of the Fantastic Film Forum will home in on film development and distribution, with a particular focus on the internationalisation of projects. The event is designed to help filmmakers explore the opportunities and tools available for developing, funding and, most importantly, selling their projects. Its programme is set out as a training course, where each session enhances the information provided in the last. They can also be enjoyed independently, so as to glean an understanding of key opportunities within the audiovisual industry.

A definite new addition to this year’s agenda is the Science Doc Day – a day’s worth of events wholly dedicated to scientific documentaries, organised in collaboration with EURASF – the European Academy of Science Film. Confirmed speakers to date include the founder and CEO of Windrose (Germany and France) Pauline Mazenod, Conference Director (Canada) Paul Lewis, producer and CEO of MyMax Edutainment and member of Doc/It’s Board of Directors (Italy) Massimo My, author and RAI Documentaries’ Commissioning Editor Coordinator Monica Bartoli, and Zenit Arti Audiovisive producer and IDS – Italian Doc Screenings Academy co-director (Italy) Massimo Arvat.

In addition to this scientific documentary day, the agenda includes a workshop on the development and promotion of projects for the international market (led by Dario Vecchiato, Head of Acquisitions at Gapbusters, Belgium, and Rickard Olsson, Picture Tree International GmbH’s international acquisitions executive in Germany), as well as an Open Day consisting of conferences, masterclasses and B2B opportunities. This Open Day will also feature Silvia Sandrone, a Project Officer for Italy’s Creative Europe Desk in Turin, who will provide an overview of Creative Europe’s 2021-2027 Financial Framework and Recovery Fund; Aleksandra Czyz, the Digital distribution manager for Italy and the UK at French firm Under the Milky Way, who will talk about “VoD: Challenges and Opportunities Relating to Digital Distribution from an Agreggator’s Perspective”; CEO of Propaganda Italia Mattia Oddone who will explore the valuable option of international co-production, and CEO of Reel Suspects (France) Matteo Lovadina, and Managing Director & Head of Acquisitions for True Colours (Italy) Gaetano Maiorino who will discuss how best to promote and sell a film from a sales agent’s perspective.

Last but not least, the Fantastic Film Forum will also explore a variety of case studies with a view to understanding how exactly other professionals have brought (or are bringing) their projects to fruition, as well as the problems that they faced in the process and how they overcame them.
