Amid the pandemic and a looming lockdown 2.0, it’s good to focus on the future – meaning, in this case, both young audiences and project development. Kids Kino.Lab, a European script development programme, is currently searching for 12 teams, consisting of a scriptwriter and a producer, to apply with a project for a full-length film or series of any genre (narrative, documentary or animation). The deadline for applications is 23 October, and the programme kicks off in early 2021 in Poland. Then, it will be followed up by three sessions at partner events: the JEF Festival in Antwerp, the Zlín Film Festival and, finally, in Warsaw during Kids Kino Industry.

The selected teams will be working with a number of tutors: Kirsten Bonnen Rask, Armin Prediger, Ronald Kruschak and Philip LaZebnik, who will be joined by the experts invited to consult on projects. “I don’t think anything in the film industry is more important than encouraging and developing movies for children, not just because they are the audience of the future, but also because the best children’s films speak to everyone,” LaZebnik, who penned such Disney classics as Pocahontas, Mulan and The Prince of Egypt, and who is currently working in Europe, tells Cineuropa exclusively. “When I read the applications for the Kids Kino.Lab, I am looking for the same three elements that Walt Disney said were the most important criteria for him when choosing a story. First, the story should have a universal theme; it should resonate with everyone in the audience, not just a subsection of it. Next, you should be able to explain what the story is in a sentence or two, so that it is clear to everyone what the film is about – including the filmmakers! And lastly, the story should have a moral point of view. What is the emotional journey of the characters? How do we understand the world a little better after watching the film?” explains the writer and Kids Kino.Lab tutor.

During the workshop, the participants will work on preparing the second draft of their script, but also on establishing a promotional and financing plan, as well as an estimated budget for the project. The fee for participating in Kids Kino.Lab is €1,600 per team, while the organisers provide accommodation and board (but do not cover travel costs).

Projects previously developed at Kids Kino.Lab include Triple Trouble (produced by Koi Studio), a film which will be presented at the Cinekid International Film Festival and the Schlingel International Film Festival, and the Greek TV series Travel Bugs, which is set to be presented at the next edition of the Annecy International Film Festival.

Kids Kino.Lab is part of a broad range of youth audience-orientated events organised by the New Horizons Association: Kids Kino Industry, Kids Kino International Film Festival, Kids Kino Presents and New Horizons of Film Education.
