While in a normal year, the Transilvania International Film Festival would programme an average of more than 200 features, the pandemic and the consequent obligation to hold only outdoor screenings reduces the selection of the 19th edition (31 July-9 August, Cluj-Napoca) to only 140. The festival will kick off on Friday with a special screening of Nicolas BedosLa Belle Époque [+lee también:

, which will be released in Romania later this year by Independenţa Film.

Besides the 12-title competition (see the news) and a record-breaking Romanian Days selection (see the news), the festival’s 19th edition will entice cinemagoers in Cluj-Napoca with a rich selection in Supernova, a sidebar that traditionally bundles together the big winners at prestigious film festivals. In order to mix new and classic titles, the 2020 edition will celebrate the century that has passed since the birth of Italian director Federico Fellini with a Close-Up sidebar showing seven of his biggest films.

This year, the FIPRESCI Award winner will be chosen from among the nine films in the Romanian Days competition. A new sidebar, Full Moon, will screen some of the newest horror and dark-fantasy movies, while the No Limit strand seems poised to shock viewers with its violent, uncomfortable, extreme or erotic selection. The traditional 3x3 section, which every year celebrates three greats of world cinema with three of their best-known features, will screen films by Greek-French director Costa-Gavras, Yugoslav helmer Dusan Makavejev and Croatian filmmaker Vinko Bresan.

The organisers have announced a strict policy allowing access to the more than ten outdoor locations where films will be shown long into the night. A selection of movies will also be available on the festival’s TIFF Unlimited streaming platform. The winners of this edition will be announced during an outdoor gala followed by the screening of Italian director Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio [+lee también:
