by Grégory Monro will nevertheless be visible to buyers on Tribeca Extranet, the platform created especially for the occasion and accessible exclusively to industry professionals. But before that, the film will be shown in France on Sunday 12 April on Arte, as part of a special evening dedicated to Stanley Kubrick (and which will begin with Barry Lyndon).

A standout last year among the thematic pitches of the 30th Sunny Side of the Doc, where it scored a victory in the Arts & Culture category, Kubrick by Kubrick was constructed by Grégory Monro, who was nominated for an International Emmy Award for best artistic program for Michel Legrand, Sans demi-mesure, and who also directed documentaries on James Stewart, Robert Mitchum and Jerry Lewis. His latest documentary is built on the foundation of interviews spanning nearly three decades with film critic Michel Ciment (director of film magazine Positif), one of the rare journalists to have interviewed several times a filmmaker famous for his distrust of the press, and who ultimately expressed himself publicly very little throughout a career dotted with masterpieces.

The documentary showcases the conversations between the two men, exploring Kubrick's working method and the genesis of his films with an original aesthetic setup (with Polish cinematographer Radoslaw Ladczuk, who has recently shot The Babadook and The Nightingale), inspired by the master’s famous travelling shots, carrying the viewer through an imaginary and labyrinthine museum, dragging them into the depths of a deceptively polite work where violence and the irrational lie hidden. The hypnotic atmosphere is underlined by film clips, interviews with actors and members of the crew (talking about their collaboration both difficult and stimulating with Kubrick) and private archives, some of them never before seen.

Produced by Jérémy Zelnik and Martin Laurent for Parisian company Temps noir, Kubrick by Kubrick was co-produced by Arte France and by Polish company Telemark (Maciej Kubicki and Anna Kepinska), with the participation of Ciné+, NHK, SBS Australia and ERT, with the support of Media Creative Europe, of the Polish Film Institute, of the Procirep and with the support the visual and audio creation of the CNC. International sales are Mediawan.
