The Cyprus Film Days International Festival, the official competitive festival of Cyprus, has been forced to postpone its 18th edition, which had been due to run from 3-11 April, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. During that period, the festival had planned to run the first edition of its co-production, training and networking platform, and the first-ever such event on the island, Dot.on.the.map Industry Days (see the news). The industry event will be moved online instead and will unspool its first special digital edition next week, from 9-11 April.

Headed up by Cypriot filmmaker Danae Stylianou, Dot.on.the.map aims to enable more artistic and financial collaborations to be created, and to contribute to the development of the art of filmmaking both in Cyprus and in the wider region, by becoming a potential hub for the countries of the Mediterranean Basin.

The organisers have received many projects from across the region, and the committee, which was made up of Cyprus Film Days IFF representatives and their counterparts from the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, has chosen six fiction feature-film projects, at the development and financing stage. During the online meetings, producers, directors and scriptwriters will be able to pitch their projects to members of the international industry and create the necessary connections to further develop, co-produce and finance their projects.

The participating directors – five of whom will be presenting their debut features while local filmmaker Stavros Pamballis will come clutching his sophomore feature, following his debut Siege on Liperti Street – will be tutored for the pitching sessions by Isabelle Fauvel, (Initiative Film, and special advisor on film development, France) and Yianna Sarri (head of the Agora at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Greece). The pitching session set to be held on 10 April will feature an audience of film professionals (producers, sales agents and film-festival representatives. Furthermore, the projects will also be competing for three awards: the Agora Networking Award, courtesy of the Thessaloniki IFF, which includes accommodation and free market accreditation for the producer of one project; colour correction and DCP mastering services worth €11,000, courtesy of Full Moon Productions; and a cash prize of €1,000, offered by the Directors’ Guild of Cyprus to the director of the winning project.
