As France contends with the growing might of the global health crisis caused by Coronavirus, the 61st Marché du Film, the biggest international gathering of film professionals in the world (12,527 participants from 151 countries took part last year, with 1,464 screenings of 857 films, including 693 world premieres, and a total of 2,768 titles proposed overall) is preparing an alternative option in the event of the cancellation of the 73rd Cannes Film Festival (scheduled 12-23 May).

Although no official announcements have yet been made, the Marché du Film’s executive producer Jérôme Paillard has divulged a few details on the backup plan he’s currently fine-tuning, which would see the Marché du Film unfold entirely online from 12 - 21 May. Films would enjoy online screenings protected by way of cinando.com technology, whereby sales agents would invite their preferred buyers to view the films. The event’s virtual negotiation meetings, meanwhile, would take place via the Match&Meet and Zoom applications. Paillard’s reorganisation would be arranged on the basis of a half-price accreditation fee.

Whilst the global film industry may have ground to a complete halt in terms of cinema screenings and film shoots, content is still very much required in order to maintain distribution activities over the coming months (whether via TV or streaming platforms) and so as to safeguard the economic revival of the sector as a whole once this health crisis has passed. As such, the large-scale organisation of virtual exchanges between sales agents and buyers is essential, both to compensate for the events which can’t be held in person due to population lockdowns, and in anticipation of 2021.

Interestingly, organisers found themselves divulging these details regarding a potential online Cannes Marché du Film more hastily than planned, in response to the revelation of an American project for virtual meetings which is currently being organised by the CAA.

Needless to say, all of the above hinges on the decisions yet to be made regarding the 73rd Cannes Film Festival (cancellation? postponement?), official announcements on which can be expected forthwith. To be continued…
