received its baptism in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival 2018. Written by the two directors, the film is a dark tale falling somewhere between the works of Italo Calvino and Gianni Rodari. It tells a no-holds-barred story of the dynamics governing human relations within a community of families on the southern outskirts of Rome, where the silent and subtle sadism of fathers, the passivity of mothers and the rage of the young all bubble away beneath the surface, weaving a dark web of dramatic consequences. As the authors explain, it’s “a choral story set within a middle-class community of the Lazio suburbs; the point of view is that of a group of eleven-year-olds. The Italian title [Favolacce] is a contraction of the words “favole” [tales] and “parolacce” [bad words], the film’s form is that of a grotesque tale".

Bad Tales will compete in the Berlinale 2020. Newly appointed director Carlo Chatrian highlights the fact that the D’Innocenzo twins are the youngest directors in the competition and describes the film as “a landscape with ruins. Not like a neorealist or second world war film, but rather a work exploring the destruction of the family unit, a universal theme which doesn’t only resonate with Italian society". Starring alongside Elio Germano are Barbara Chichiarelli, Lino Musella, Gabriel Montesi, Max Malatesta, Tommaso Di Cola, Giulietta Rebeggiani, Justin Korovkin, Giulia Melillo, Laura Borgioli, Giulia Galiani, Barbara Ronchi, Ileana D'Ambra, Cristina Pellegrino, Aldo Ottobrino and Sara Bertelà. Cinematography is in the hands of Paolo Carnera, editing Esmeralda Calabria, an set design Emita Frigato and Paola Peraro, while costumes come courtesy of Massimo Cantini Parrini.

Bad Tales is an Italian-Swiss production by Pepito Produzioni, Rai Cinema and Vision Distribution - in association with QMI - in co-production with Amka Films and RSI Radio Televisione Svizzera/SRG SSR. The film will be released in Italian cinemas on 16 April 2020 via Vision Distribution. German firm The Match Factory are in charge of international sales.
