London-based blockchain platform FilmChain, which is the first automatic service specialising in collecting, allocating and analysing film, TV and digital revenues, has been selected as a finalist in the Entertainment and Content category for the 12th annual SXSW Pitch, which will be held from 14-15 March in Austin, Texas, during the upcoming South by Southwest Conference & Festivals (13-22 March).

Formerly known as SXSW Accelerator, the annual SXSW Pitch is one of the most important events of the Startups Track, where emerging entrepreneurs are able to showcase their startups and technologies in front of a panel of specially selected expert judges and live audiences. A total of 50 finalists, out of more than 900 applicants, have been selected in ten categories. FilmChain is the only European startup in the Entertainment and Content category, while the rest of the selection includes one Australian and three US-based startups.

FilmChain, which was first launched by Maria Tanjala and Irina Albita during the 2018 Berlin Film Festival’s EFM Horizon Startups, and which by the end of 2019 boasted a total of 30 films on its platform, will be eligible to win one of the 2020 SXSW Pitch Awards, which will be given out at the end of the event. It should be noted that SXSW Pitch has played an important role in the early-stage venture ecosystem, allowing emerging companies to guarantee the resources they need to succeed. According to SXSW Pitch event producer Chris Valentine, “Of the 503 companies who have participated since the competition’s inception, over 75% have gone on to secure funding and 16% have been acquired. We’re excited to see this year’s impressive group of startups take to the stage and show us how their innovations will change the world.” It’s worth noting that one of the best-known alumni of the pitch is Siri, which was later acquired by Apple.

Regarding the selection, FilmChain co-founder Maria Tanjala stated: “It’s a hugely exciting time for content, with hybrids between film, tech, games and streaming, and SXSW is the place where the world comes to see the curated leaders in innovation. We are truly honoured to have the chance to get on that stage and be able to showcase how revolutionary FilmChain is for the media industry.”
