Generally intended to single out films that are sure to set tongues wagging on the line-ups of the major forthcoming festivals, the 33rd Films in Progress event organised during the 30th edition of Cinélatino – Rencontres de Toulouse smiled twofold upon Los Silencios [+lee también:

ficha de la película] by Beatriz Seigner, as it took home the top prize as well as the award handed out by the jury of European distributors and exhibitors.

The story, written by the Brazilian director (who turned heads with her feature debut, Bollywood Dream), recounts how Nuria and Fabio arrive with their mother, Amparo, on a remote island on the border between Brazil, Colombia and Peru. They are fleeing Colombia’s armed conflicts. Fearful of giving away any family secrets, Nuria retreats into silence. At the same time, the family is trying to get compensation for the death of the father, and to get hold of a visa in order to emigrate to Brazil. But as they brush this story under the carpet, they gradually find out other stories about the family’s past… Produced by Brazilian outfit Enquadramento Produções and Miriade Filmes (the filmmaker’s own company), Los Silencios is being co-produced by France’s Cine-Sud Promotion and Colombia’s Día-Fragma Fábrica de Películas.

Films in Progress 33 (which is run by Cinélatino – Rencontres de Toulouse and the San Sebastián Film Festival) also handed a Special Award to a European co-production: Fireflies by Iranian director Bani Khoshnoudi (who is now based in Mexico). The film is being produced by the USA (Zensky Cine) together with Greece (Haos Film), Mexico (Pensée Sauvage) and the Dominican Republic (Aurora Republicana).

The fiction-feature competition at the 2018 Cinélatino Festival awarded its Grand Prix Coup de Cœur (“Love at First Sight Grand Prize”) to Zama [+lee también:
