follows the struggles of Adrian (Cilléin McEvoy), a famous young pianist who is diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's disease. Unable to cope with the implications of the illness and in denial, Adrian runs away from home and heads to Dublin, where he rents a room in a shared flat. Here he finds Will (Jack Fenton), Jodie (Martina Babisova) and David (Patrick O'Brien), who play together in a punk band, The Cellmates. Their friendship will help him to redefine himself as a person and as a musician.

This is the story told in the debut feature by Chiara Viale, a young Italian director based in Dublin. The New Music is her first independent, no-budget project, born of a short-film script written in spring 2016. When asked about how the idea came about, Viale disclosed to Cineuropa: “In early 2017, I decided to take part in the One Year Feature Film Challenge launched by the Dublin Filmmakers Collective. I went back to my script and adapted it into what became The New Music. Ever since I wrote it, I have always felt that there was a story in that script that needed to be told: a chance to shine a light on a rare disease and to communicate how music can truly save lives. This story was more important than anything I had ever written, and I could not miss out on the opportunity to bring it to life.”

Produced by Philipp Kidd and the director herself for Young Parkinson’s IrelandThe New Music's pre-production phase took place between April and May 2017, and principal photography was completed in September 2017. The project, shot in Dublin, Wexford and Mayo, has not been without complications. In this respect, Viale explained: “Because of the nature of this film, everyone who took part in the production was a volunteer and came on board the project because they believed in its potential and in its message. Despite the obvious struggles from a budget point of view, I cannot even start to list the number of doors that were opened to us and the number of people who came on set, gave us advice and lent us a hand when we needed it most.”

Furthermore, a crowdfunding campaign was launched in September 2017. The initiative’s goal is to cover the necessary post-production, marketing and distribution costs, as well as to raise funds to pass on directly to Young Parkinson’s Ireland. 20% of the funds raised are being donated to Young Parkinson’s Ireland on a monthly basis; once the target amount is reached, any further donations will be passed on in full to the association. The New Music's post-production will wrap in autumn 2018, and it will be ready for an official release in 2019.
