Séries Mania Forum y Beta crean SERIESMAKERS

The professional sidebar of the Series Mania Festival (which kicked off in Lille on Friday - article), Series Mania Forum (running from 22 – 24 March – read our news and our interview with the event director Francesco Capurro), is linking up with Germany’s Beta Group to launch the SERIESMAKERS initiative, which looks to support film talent migrating from the world of cinema to the world of series, a booming phenomenon concealing significant differences yet to be overcome between the two contexts.

SERIESMAKERS will select ten scripted series projects, two of which will each be awarded a development grant of 50,000 euros by a dedicated jury during the Series Mania Forum’s 2023 edition. The ten selected teams will benefit from a tailored training programme led by A-list directors, showrunners, screenwriters and producers who will help them refine their pitch deck and develop a series bible. As well as receiving personalised advice from the Beta Content team, the two winning projects will also be invited to the Series Mania Forum where they will be given the opportunity to pitch to sector professionals.

SERIESMAKERS is open to director-producer (and/or director-screenwriter) teams who have previously been selected in category A festivals by way of their first or second feature films and who have an idea for a series. Full details on how to apply will be published on the Series Mania website at the beginning of the summer.

According to Laurence Herszberg (Managing Director of Series Mania), "Television series have become a desirable destination for feature filmmakers thanks to the dramatic evolution of the industry which has witnessed an increase in programmes’ creative and production quality in recent years. We want to help filmmakers as they embark on this journey into a new realm of creative opportunities, and we are thrilled to be partnering with BETA who have always supported high-quality storytelling."

In the words of Koby Gal Raday (Head of Content at Beta Group), "Beta has always been and will always be an independent European hub for independent filmmakers looking to bring their ambitious artistic visions to life. We are proud to be launching SERIESMAKERS with a leading professional partner such as Series Mania. This initiative, the first to focus on feature film directors, will enable unique filmmakers to focus on the development of their new series in a supportive and encouraging environment."

Indeed, the Series Mania Festival is on its way to building a solid network of alliances with Germany, having already awarded a prize (read our news) within the Co-Pro Series programme which unfolded within the Berlinale’s European Film Market.
