Young French experimental director Sarah Darmon is interviewed during the Pesaro International Film Festival of New Cinema 2003, where she presented her works within the retrospective dedicated to French Avant-Garde Contemporary Cinema. A section dedicated to "underground" and experimental French films, organised with the collaboration of co-operations of filmmakers (as the Parisian atelier “Etna”, the Collectif “Jeune Cinema” and the group “Light Cone”), with about 40 works, mostly short films, screened.
Sarah Darmon explains in the interview that her first aim as a filmmaker has always been to make cinema, before considering herself experimental.
She has always loved cinema in all its forms. She started writing when she was 18, and studied with Stéphane Marti in the Plastic Arts program at the University of Paris I, where she discovered the expressive possibilities of Super 8, the format she has used for all of her films. The Super 8 film is a motion picture film format released by Kodak in 1965. She in fact considers her first film more as a passage from screen writing to directing.
She believes experimental cinema involves different elements: a personal way of representing images, a research carried out with images, offering the possibility to concentrate on more precise elements.
At the festival she presents with Orlan Roy her films, Baby doll 5 (19'), and the 6' short film Ink, both produced in 1999.
