Critic and editor of the film magazine Cahier du Cinema during the 80's, Pascal Bonitzer, was also the screenwriter of most of Rivette's productions from 1984.
He wrote about 40 scripts in 20 years, working also with Ruiz, Téchiné, Chantal Akerman and John Lvoff. Small Cuts is the director's third full length film, following Encore (1996) and Rien sur Robert (1999).
He presents his film during the press conference at the 53rd Festival of Berlin, where he says about the use of the word "communism" in his film that "it is a word that after a certain number of avatars has become quite derisory and comic. In the film the word assumes the same meaning it has today".
