MEDIA 2007 supports Motovun and Animafest

As the first non-EU member country of MEDIA 2007, Croatia sees the first substantial benefit from its membership, which began in September 2008. Two if its most prominent festivals, the Motovun Film Festival and Animafest, have received funding.

This year's Animafest will be co-financed with €27,921 while Motovun will receive €35,000 annually in the next four years.

Animafest is one of the oldest festivals of its kind in south-eastern Europe, having been established in 1990 on the heels of the world-famous Zagreb Animation School.

Motovun was founded in 1999 as a small event organized by a group of enthusiasts led by Croatian director Rajko Grlic and UK producer Mike Downey of Film and Music Entertainment. It quickly grew into the top international festival in the region, starting an avalanche of new film festivals in Croatia. It is estimated that there are now about 50 international film festivals in the country, which has a population of 4.5 million.
