FESTIVALS France

Changes to Critics Week management

by

The French Society of Directors - SRF has nominated a new Delegate General to Critics’ Week, the prestigious sidebar event to the Cannes Film Festival. François Da Silva was chosen over fourteen other candidates to replace Marie-Pierre Macia who was fired after last July’s controversies. Da Silva’s mandate will last for one year.
Da Silva, a manager, co-ordinator and owner of film theatres for over twenty years is familiar with the “territory”. In the course of his long career Da Silva opened seven Arthouse theatres, notably the César Variétés in Marseille, and supervised the programming of Paris cinemas.
Da Silva’s independence won the SRF board over. The official press release reveals that “Da Silva will enjoy absolute artistic freedom in the choice and selection of films.” His appointment reflects the desire of both the SRF and its president, Pascal Thomas, to refocus Critics’ Week on directors once more and welcome and search out new ideas and creativity.
It is up to Da Silva to execute this return to the origins of this important event in time for the next edition, scheduled for May 2003.
