Bac distribution splits up

by

The Bac Majestic story continues. StudioCanal has decided to divorce from Bac Distribution with whom, for the last two years, they managed the GIE company.
The assets will be equally divided between the two former partners, with Bac Majestic hanging onto Bac Films and StudioCanal getting total control of Mars Films, which will merge with Canal+ to form a new distribution channel. StudioCanal will continue to support Bac Majestic financially in return for part ownership of Bac’s library of film titles, furthermore StudioCanal is to purchase Mars Distribution.
“We will fulfil our role as Bac Distribution shareholders, honour our commitments and release our films,” said StudioCanal president Richard Lenormand at yesterday’s press conference. “After Canal+ decided to cut film production, not renew its contracts with StudioCanal and a number of American companies and concentrate instead on French production, we realised that our position in these two distribution companies had to be reorganised.” Its continuing financial support of StudioCanal will not be too onerous for Bac Majestic, however, despite the huge debts it has run up with the Eclair and LTC film laboratories and a number of post-production facilities.
This separation is unlikely to affect StudioCanal and Mars’ numerous forthcoming releases that include Sophie Marceau’s Parlez-moi d’amour on 9 October and Danièle Thompson’s Décalage horaire on 10 October.
