Spanish Movie, a different kind of comedy

For years, Spanish film has been plagued by the tag españolada (meaning “stereotypically Spanish”), referring to local comedies featuring scantily-clad women and dramas about the civil war, which summed up domestic production for some viewers. Although Spanish audiences aren’t suddenly flocking to see local films (see news), the bad spell seems to be over, as demonstrated by Javier Ruiz Caldera’s debut work Spanish Movie, a satirical celebration of Spanish cinema.

The title – which started shooting on February 23 – ventures into an area as yet unexplored in Spain, by parodying successful films such as The Orphanage [+see also:
