Isabelle Huppert to head jury

The jury of the 62nd Cannes Film Festival (May 13-24, 2009) will be presided by French actress Isabelle Huppert.

A regular on the Croisette, the actress has appeared in over 25 films, shown in or out of competition, and served as a mistress of ceremonies and jury member. Huppert has also won two Best Actress awards: in 1978 for Claude Chabrol’s Violette Nozière and in 2001 for Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher [+see also:

“I’m very happy and very proud,” Huppert said as she accepted the invitation from festival president Gilles Jacob and delegate general Thierry Frémaux. She added: “Cannes and I have a long history and this next event will definitely seal my love for the Festival, and for international film. Cannes is an open door to all the new ideas in the world. The chance to be a privileged audience member fills me with enthusiasm.“

Nominated 12 times since 1978 for the Best Actress Cesar, Huppert won the title in 1996 for A Judgement in Stone (which also earned her the Volpi Cup at Venice). Her honours also include a Silver Bear Award at Berlin in 2002 for 8 Women [+see also:

and Best Actress at Venice for Story of Women in 1988.

The actress – who received Lifetime Achievement awards at San Sebastian in 2003 and Venice in 2005 – has also picked up a David di Donatello and German Film Award, among others. Her filmography includes around 80 features by, among others, Maurice Pialat, Jean-Luc Godard, Bertrand Tavernier, André Téchiné, Patrice Chéreau, Olivier Assayas, Benoît Jacquot, Bertrand Blier, Olivier Dahan, Christophe Honoré, Michael Cimino, Joseph Losey, Marco Ferreri, the Taviani brothers, Raoul Ruiz, Andrej Wajda, Werner Schroeter and Joachim Lafosse.
