Advances on receipts for Anger and Larrivaz

by

Seven screenplays for debut and second features have received advances on receipts, which were ratified in mid-July by Véronique Cayla – the Director General of the National Film Centre (CNC) – after the selection made by the first committee.

Chosen projects include L’avocat (“The Lawyer”, produced by Sunrise Films), the second directorial feature by screenwriter Cédric Anger (see interview). The filmmaker received acclaim for his debut film The Killer [+see also:

, which was selected at Rotterdam early this year and recently screened at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival as part of the Variety Critics’ Choice section, co-organised by European Film Promotion.

An advance on receipts was also granted to Le paradis des bêtes (“The Paradise of Animals”), the debut feature by actress Estelle Larrivaz, who has appeared in several films by Christian Vincent. Pitched at the latest Franco-German film meetings, the film, written by the director, tells the story of a family breakdown.

A formerly close-knit couple is torn apart by a father who loves his family in a disturbing way and a mother who wants to escape her home that has become a gilded prison. Caught in the middle of it all are the children who are tossed around like spoils of war. The film is produced by Sylvie Pialat (Producer on the Move 2007 – see interview) for Les Films du Worso.

Other selected screenplays include Le bruit des enfants fourmis (“The Sound of the Child Ants”) by Christine François, who already has TV dramas and several documentaries (Le Chemin de Jade, J'ai deux mamans, L’adolescence au bord de la vie, Brigade des mineurs) to her name. Her debut narrative feature will be produced by Blanche Guichou for Agat Films & Cie.

At this summer session, the advances on receipts committee also selected Gilles Martinerie’s Le diable dans la peau (“The Devil in the Skin”, produced by Manuel Pradal for Lelia Films); Molly et les majorettes (“Molly and the Majorettes”, produced by Sodaperaga) by Charles Fréger, who previously made a name for himself in the field of photography; and Clarisse Hahn’s documentary project Kurdish Lover (Les Films du présent).

Finally, the CNC has also renewed its pledge of an advance on receipts for Black Box (produced by Ciné Nominé), the second feature, still in development, by Fabrice Génestal, following The Squale.
