Akin scoops four Lolas

The ceremony of the Lola German Film Awards – which were founded in 1951 but have been awarded since 2005 by the members of the German Film Academy (under the patronage of Culture Minister Bernd Neumann) – was held Friday in Berlin.

The major winner is Fatih Akin’s The Edge of Heaven [+see also:

, which scooped four awards including the Golden Lola for Best Film.

The film – a bridge between German and Turkish culture – is produced by Corazón International. The title also picked up Best Director and Best Screenplay, as well as the Lola for Best Editing (Andrew Bird). These can be added to the prizes won at last year’s Cannes Film Festival (Best Screenplay and the Ecumenical Jury Prize).

The Silver Lola for Best Film went to Doris Dörrie’s moving Cherry Blossoms – Hanami [+see also:

, which screened in competition at the latest Berlinale.

This film about life and the acceptance of death was shot in Germany and Japan. The title also won the Lolas for Best Actor (Elmar Wepper, who won a Bavarian Film Award for this role) and Best Costume Design.

picked up the Bronze Lola for Best Film as well as the Best Supporting Actor Award (Frederick Lau).

Bettina Blümner’s Pool of Princesses was crowned Best Documentary and Armin Völckers’ Leroy Best Children’s and Youth Film. The latter also took home the award for Best Film Score (Ali N. Askin).
