General overview shows Rooster top dog in 2007

In the past three years, 18 domestic films were released in Slovenia, of which six were co-productions. In 2005, there were four domestic and two co-productions; in 2006, two domestic and two co-productions. This increased in 2007 with seven domestic films produced and two co-productions.

Last year’s Rooster's Breakfast by Marko Nabersnik was the most successful title, garnering 176,807 admissions to become the third highest grosser ever. As for the top co-production, Rajko Grlic's Border Post sold 15,000 admissions in 2006.

However, US productions rule Slovenia's box office. In 2006, the highest grosser was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest with 138,862 admissions. The best-placed European film was Germany's The White Masai [+see also:

in 19th position with 27,950 admissions. The best-placed Slovenian film was Short Circuits, in at 115. Overall box office for 2006 was €9,657,496 from 759 films.

Thanks to Rooster's Breakfast, the situation slightly changed in 2007. It was followed by UK's Mr. Bean's Holiday [+see also:

and then the usual Hollywood fare. Overall box office was €9,068,436.19 from 689 films.

Currently, David Ayer's Street Kings tops the weekly chart.

As for production companies, of the 41 in operation the most successful are Emotionfilm/Vertigo, Arsmedia and Stara Gara. There are seven Slovenian films in distribution. One film is in post-production and one is in production. There are three film studios working, but no real studio system.

The Slovenian Film Fund participates with 50% of the budget for national films and 20% for co-productions, chosen by public competitions. It also finances film festivals and organizes the National Film Festival in Portoroz. Financing goes to five international festivals. The Ljubljana International Film Festival is financed from the state budget.
