Call to directors: "Save Filmltalia"

by

Forty directors have signed a petition for Filmitalia, the agency for the promotion of Italian cinema abroad, headed by Irene Bignardi, whose duties are on the verge of being absorbed by Cinecittà Holding.

Today, the board of directors of the Holding, the operating arm of the Ministry of Culture, is convening to decide upon the "revision the organisational structure of all controlled companies", which could result in a decision to down-size or close Filmitalia.

"This presents a huge risk for our film industry" reads the petition, signed by, among others, Marco Bellocchio, Nanni Moretti, Daniele Luchetti, Gabriele Muccino, Gabriele Salvatores, Paolo Virzì, Giuliano Montaldo, Ferzan Ozpetek, Sergio Rubini, Ettore Scola, Saverio Costanzo and Paolo Sorrentino. Cinecittà’s is "an important decision made far too hastily, without any debate with those who make films and are directly affected by international promotion, our field’s true strategic resource".
