Epic films draw crowds

Last weekend, Scandinavian audiences continued to pour into cinemas to see Arn: The Knight Templar [+see also:

, the second top grossing film in Sweden and in Denmark and number eight in Norway, while Nils Gaup’s historical epic The Kautokeino Rebellion [+see also:

opened to record numbers for Sandrew Metronome in Norway.

The Kautokeino Rebellion opened first in the top ten with over 42,000 admissions from 48 screens in three days. Local critics hailed Gaup’s return to a Sami subject matter, 20 years after the Oscar nominated Pathfinder. Another Norwegian film continues to perform, the small budget chiller Backwoods (Euforia Distribution), which has sold 50,000 tickets in two weeks.

New openers this Friday include The Kite Runner (Sandrew Metronome) and Hallam Foe [+see also:

(Nordisk).

In Sweden, Arn continues its steady growth towards SF’s one million admissions target, with 856,000 registered last weekend from 168 screens. The film stayed at number two, squeezed between National Treasure 2 and Bee Movie.

gave Atlantic Film a 10th place on local charts, supported by excellent reviews. The German documentary film The Big Sell-Out by Florian Opitz is opening today through Folkets Bio.

In Denmark, Susanne Bier’s Hollywood debut Things We Lost in the Fire released by UIP was number one, ahead of Arn the crusader (70,000 admissions for SF from 41 screens). The local animated film Amazon Jack 3: Jungo Goes Bananas is getting closer to the 100,000 admissions for Nordisk, and was the only Danish film at the top ten last weekend.

Camera Film had one of the best screen averages with Spanish thriller The Orphanage [+see also:

. The new openers today include The Kite Runner (SMD) and the Danish youth movie Remix by Martin Hagbjer.

In Finland, the local quartet in the top four positions hasn’t moved. Dome Karukoski’s Home for the Butterflies playing on 41 screens for Nordisk, has garnered nearly 43,000 admissions in only two weeks. Lauri Nurkse’s romantic comedy Playing Solo [+see also:

is another hit for Nordisk with 114,709 admissions from 42 screens, followed very closely by Nordisk’ other release Quest for a Heart

Åke Lindman and Sakari Kirjavainen´s war film Tali-Ihantala 1944 [+see also:

is still number four with 163,301 admissions for Walt Disney Studios from 55 screens. A new Finnish film is opening this Friday: 8 Days to Premiere by Perttu Leppä (FS Film).

In Iceland, Baltasar Kormákur’s White Night Wedding [+see also:

had no problem topping the charts with a total of 6,126 tickets from seven screens for Sena.
