Orphanage and 13 Rosas lead Goya nominations

Juan Antonio Bayona's The Orphanage and Martínez Lázaro's Las 13 Rosas have snagged the most nominations – 14 each – for the upcoming Goya awards, announced yesterday by the Spanish Film Academy.

The horror box office hit produced by Guillermo del Toro (news) and the historic drama of 13 women executed at the beginning of the Franco regime (news) will compete for Best Film against indie title Solitary Fragments by Jaime Rosales (see interview) and Siete mesas (de billar francés) by Gracia Querejeta (see news).

With a total of 10 nominations – including Best Film, Director, Original Script and Actress (a double nomination for the leading actresses Blanca Portillo and Maribel Verdú) – Siete mesas (de billar francés) is also another favourite, followed by Gonzalo Suárez's Oviedo Express (eight nominations) and Icíar Bollaín's Mataharis (six nominations).

Seventy-four year-old actor Alfredo Landa will receive the honorary Goya.
