DOK Leipzig turns 50

The International Leipzig Festival of Documentary and Animated Film last night celebrated the opening of its 50th edition (October 29-November 4) with a selection of shorts from 1961-76, in the presence of various official personalities and Festival Director Class Danielsen

The event will screen a total of 120 animated films and 190 documentaries from around 60 countries and includes four competitive sections, one of which, International Documentaries, features 21 films, including 13 European titles and two co-productions.

These titles are also vying for the Golden Dove and Silver Dove Awards, as are the animated films in international competition.

A further competition is dedicated to German documentaries about everyday life and social conditions in Germany. The fourth competitive section, Generation DOK, is new this year and is offering a young documentary filmmaker from anywhere in the world the chance to win a Dove Award for Best Talent.

The festival also offers special events, such Lost Paradise Found, dedicated to long-term documentary projects, and a tribute to ARTE. For its 50th anniversary, Leipzig will also present two comprehensive retrospectives on 50 years of politics and the history of Germany.

For film professionals, Leipzig is also hosting an important market that involves a series of discussions, a Discovery Campus Pitching Forum, the 3rd International DOK Leipzig Co-Production Meeting (October 29-31), the 2nd Leipzig Screenings (November 1-2) and a brand new and very extensive DOK Market Digital.
