European wave to reach Gijón

The Gijón International Film Festival, in the Spanish region of Asturias, has recently unveiled portions of the main programme of its 45th edition, which runs from November 22-December 1.

The official section includes 20 titles, seen in major international showcases earlier this year but screening in Spain for the very first time. European talent is represented by 13 productions or co-productions.

Spanish cinema is represented by Pere Portabella’s The Silence Before Bach, recently shown in Venice (see news), and Unas fotos en la ciudad de Sylvia by José Luis Guerín (interview), an experimental photo-documentary whose concept and narrative are, despite its title, separate from his recent film feature En la ciudad de Sylvia [+see also:

. Screening out of competition, the film is vying for the Non-Fiction and Documentary Award.

Parallel to the official section, Gijón has also programmed three retrospectives on the works of talented young directors Pawel Pawlikowski, Danielle Arbid and Carlos Reygadas. Local audiences can now (re)discover, among others films, My Summer of Love [+see also:
