Wajda’s Katyń opens Gdynia

The 32nd Gdynia Polish Film Festival opens today for a week of national cinema, which will see 22 films, including 15 titles making their world premiere, vie for the Golden Lion. Out of competition, Andrzej Wajda’s latest film, Katyń (Post mortem. Opowiesc katynska) [+see also:

, will open the festival.

The competition section – the main axis of the festival – hosts titles from the big names of Polish cinema (Robert Gliński, Dorota Kędzierzawska, Jacek Bromski, Andrzej Barański, Jerzy Stuhr) as well as films by young directors in search of recognition: Stanislaw Mucha, Piotr Szczepański and Tomasz Drozdowicz.

The most anticipated film in competition is the second feature by well-known Polish DoP and two-time Oscar winner Janusz Kamiński. His Hania (see news) recently finished filming to be selected at the last minute.

The jury, presided over this year by Janusz Majewski (Deserters, Po sezonie), will award the Platinum Lion lifetime achievement award to Jerzy Kawalerowicz (Austeria, Quo Vadis).

In addition to the official competition, festival-goers can attend the annual competition of independent cinema (21 titles) and for the first time Gdynia will be presenting a selection of graduation films.

The festivities don’t end there. The Polonica cycle will present films co-produced by Poland, such as Peter Greenaway’s Nightwatching [+see also:
