Pulsatilla: From the page to the big screen

After the success of Melissa P., whose scandalous book (entitled 100 Strokes of the Brush Before Bed) was turned into a film by Luca Guadagnino, another novel by a young, taboo-less writer is preparing for its big screen debut.

The book is La ballata delle prugne secche by Pulsatilla (real name Valeria Di Napoli), the literary sensation of 2006 that came about from a blog and was discovered by publishing company Castelvecchi. The film will be produced by Nikolaus Production, founded last January, and directed by Angelo Orlando, who will begin shooting in August in Puglia.

The 45 year-old director is better known as an actor – in films such as I Thought It Was Love by Massimo Troisi and Fellini’s The Voice of the Moon – than behind the camera with L'anno prossimo vado a letto alle dieci and the more recent Sfiorarsi.

The story, in which sex plays an important role, centres on the character of Pulsatilla, with her encounters, emotions, loves and delusions. However, the book’s author says, “The risk of turning Ballata into soft porn is not so remote but I’d rather protect the identity of the character, so that she maintains her somewhat controversial and unique tone".
