FESTIVALS Romania

Transylvania Film Fest: Not just vampires

by

Its name evokes those wonderful horror films of bygone times that starred Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. However, with the legendary adventures of Dracula behind it, Transylvania has for six years been hosting one of Eastern Europe’s most important film events and those who happen to be passing through Cluj and Sibiu from June 1-10 should by no means miss the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF).

This year, Romania’s foremost film festival will offer an abundant programme that combines the winning films from festivals worldwide with premieres of Romanian features and shorts. The TIFF will serve up a mélange of horror and fantasy films and retrospectives, while reserving for its more transgressive titles a section aptly entitled “No Limit”.

Romanian Days will offer audiences the chance to see some of the most recent domestic productions and participate in seminars and workshops, most notably “Let’ s Go Digital”, which is aimed at bringing young people closer to the techniques of digital cinema.

One of TIFF’s most prominent special events will be the presentation of the restored print of Romanian cult classic The Moromete Family and the premieres of two of the most highly anticipated local films: The Rest is Silence by Nae Caranfil and California Dreaming by Cristian Nemescu.

The festival will furthermore feature the first Romanian edition of “Shooting Stars”, with six young actors chosen by European Film Promotion, while Romanian Film Project Meetings – informal project presentations to potential buyers – will take place for a second year in a row.
