Salvador: United against the death penalty

Following the resolution against the death penalty (which passed with a majority vote) in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Salvador [+see also:

, on the real life of Salvador Puig Antich, the last person to be condemned to death in Francoist Spain (see report from Cannes 2006, where the film screened in Un Certain Regard) is coming out in Italian theatres.

The film by Manuel Huerga (see interview), which was enormously successful in Spain (481,341 admissions from December 31, 2006 for nearly €2.6 at the box office) and resparked the debate on the many still-open wounds from the dictatorship, is being distributed in Italy by Delta Pictures, which signed a service agreement with Istituto Luce for its release on over 60 screens.

Delta Pictures CEO Nicola Burgay told Cineuropa that his company also oversaw the marketing of the film, which included an “Io Sono Contro” (lit. “I Am Against It”) campaign, which saw the participation of celebrities such as director Michele Placido, musician-director Federico Zampaglione, Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni and former President of the Republic Francesco Cossiga, as well as numerous citizens who received a t-shirt against the death penalty during the film’s travelling promotional campaign in several Italian cities.
