DFFF hands out first subsidies
The new production funding system set up by the German Ministry of Culture on January 1, the DFFF (see Special Report), has selected its first 16 film projects, which will receive subsidies of almost €6.6m.
Two films funded include Kirschblüten by Doris Dörrie (The Fisherman and His Wife [+see also:

film profile], How to Cook Your Life) and Ole Christian Madsen’s Flame & Citron.
Dörrie’s title – filming of which just wrapped in Munich and will now head to Japan – is the story of a widow (Elmar Wepper) who decides to realise the dream of his late wife (Hannelore Elsner) of visiting the Asian country.
Starring Maximilian Brückner and Nadja Uhl, Kirschblüten does not exceed the number of authorised days of filming abroad (up to 30% of production days) – one of the conditions that must be met in order to be eligible for funding. A sum of €357,499 was presented to producer Molly von Fürstenberg of Olga Film. The film will be released by Majestic Filmverleih.
Flame & Citron by Danish director Madsen recounts the true and tragic story of two Copenhagen WWII resistant fighters (Mads Mikkelsen and Christian Berkel).
Produced by Nimbus Film’s Lars Bredo Rahbek and Morten Kaufmann, as well as Wüste Film Ost Filmproduktion’s Stefan Schubert and Ralph Schwingel, in co-production with Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures, the film received €342,188 in funding.
Filming began in Prague and will continue in the Berlin region before wrapping up in Denmark mid-June. Flame & Citron’s German release will be handled by NFP Neue Filmproduktion.
Other projects funded by the DFFF include Alan Simpson’s Prinzessin Lillifee, Oliver Mielke’s Ossi's Eleven, Jan Henrik Stahlberg and Marcus Mittermeier’s Shortcut to Hollywood, Othmar Schmiderer’s documentary Back to Africa and Memory Books by Christa Graf.
