FUNDING France

The movie industry negociates with cable and satellite

by

French film industry professionals announced they were about to begin a series of negotiations with TV channels, TPS and CineCinemas on the issue of film production funding. As of 1 January 2003, French legislation will oblige cable and satellite premium channels to implement the “diversity clause”. This clause calls for TV companies to invest a pre-established percentage of their profits in film buying, and some of these films must be French language, and they must also earmark a given amount of money in low-budget feature film production. The TV channels in question will be asked to sign a contract that gradually implements this new system of funding, with a clause guaranteeing a fixed minimum level of investment to ensure that film industry funding never falls below a certain level.
TPS signed a similar agreement with Blic (the French film industry’s umbrella association) and is in talks with Bloc (the umbrella association of French film organisations).
