Poelvoorde lives parallel life in Les deux mondes

by

For the past week, South Africa has been host to the shoot of Daniel Cohen’s second feature, Les deux mondes (lit. “Two Worlds”).

Starring Benoît Poelvoorde, the film centres on Rémi Bassano, a small Parisian artisan. Reserved and insignificant, Bassano is suddenly propelled into a parallel world where he is given the role as a liberator of an oppressed tribe, with whom he embarks on secret epic adventures. Adoration from his people allows him to discover unsuspected inner resources.

"It is a comedy [on] how to stay ordinary when you are God and how to be God when you are ordinary," Poelvoorde says about the film. Co-written by the director and Jean-Marc Culiersi, the story offers a grand role that matches the talent of an actor nominated for the Best Actor Cesar in 2005 and 2006 for Podium and In His Hands [+see also:

, respectively, and twice nominated Best Belgian Actor of the Year for The Carriers Are Waiting and Aaltra.

, Poelvoorde will star in the upcoming French helmer Benoît Mariage’s Cowboy (see news), which is set for release this May, and as Brutus in French blockbuster Asterix at the Olympic Games (see article), out in January 2008.

Cohen – who made his debut feature Une vie de prince in 1999 – also scripted Steve Suissa’s The Great Role (2004). Deux mondes stars Zofia Borucka (Jean Reno’s wife), Augustin Legrand and Laurent Labasse.

Produced by Mathieu Kassovitz and Benoit Jaubert for MNP Entreprise together with Gaumont, the €18m production received support from TF1 and Canal +.

Filming, which is expected to wrap in mid-April, will take place in the Paris region for a month. Les deux mondes opens in France in February 2008 through Gaumont, who will also handle international sales.
