Figures drop 18℅ in July

by

This July, Portugal's film theatres were visited by nearly 1.5m (1.428.710) cinemagoers. The figure represents a drop of 18.6℅ when compared to the number of admissions in the same period in 2005.

Though this drop is not particularly dangerous – and certainly not something new in the summer period – it caught the attention of the market analysts as it interrupts a three-month growth (April-June) that came after a first, disastrous trimester this year (see news).

Despite the ups and downs, admissions are at almost 9m since the beginning of the year, with a box office of over €37.5 for the seven-month period.

Blockbusters such as The Da Vinci Code (703,147 admissions) and Ice Age 2 (489,846), both released in the second trimester, contributed to these results while local productions reported less astonishing figures.

by Tiago Guedes and Frederico Serra (see news). Distributed by Atalanta in the beginning of March, the thriller attracted 28,846 admissions.

In at second is the documentary Lisboetas by Sérgio Tréfaut (13,819), whereas the third- and fourth-place titles are Manoel de Oliveira's Magic Mirror (2,545) and Joaquin Oristrell's Inconscientes (2,581).
