Shooting starts on Naissance des pieuvres

Principal photography on Céline Sciamma’s, Naissance des pieuvres (lit. “Birth of the Octopuses”) began in Paris today. The director’s debut feature, produced by Bénédicte and Jérôme Dopffer for Les Productions Balthazar, is a comedy about adolescence told from a female perspective, and inspired by Lukas Moodysson’s Fucking Amal and La vie ne me fait pas peur (lit. “I’m Not Afraid of Life”) by Noémie Lvovsky.

Starring amateur actresses, except for Adele Haenel (acclaimed for her performance in The Devils by Christophe Ruggia), the film by the 27 year-old director, which won this year’s Sopadin Best Junior Screenplay, recounts the misadventures of three young girls, Marie, Floriane and Anne.

Taking part by accident in a synchronized swimming contest, Marie, 15, a true revelation, begins to develop an obsession for this strange discipline. But Floriane, the best swimmer, sees behind this bizarre obsession another, more secret desire. In the privacy of their rooms, the teenagers’ behaviour is far from graceful and proves deceptive. This becomes especially evident when desire and love suddenly appear for the first time like an illness with strange symptoms.

The €2m Naissance des pieuvres was granted an advance on receipts of €470,000 from the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC), backing from the Ile de France region (€383 000) and a pre-sales agreement from Canal +.

The estimated 38-day shoot – the majority of which takes place in the Val d’Oise département – is expected to finish on September 9, with the film due to arrive on screens in spring 2007.
