film profile] by Michele Placido won seven awards: Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Luca Bigazzi), Best Art Direction, Best Costumes, Best Editing and Best Supporting Actor (Pierfrancesco Favino). Placido also received the David Giovani, given out by Italian high school students.

"I think the jury, made up mostly of film industry people, appreciated the cinematic qualities of The Caiman, and I don’t believe they allowed themselves to be influenced by the film’s political aspects, which the newspaper headlines brought to the forefront", commented Moretti to journalists at the end of the night.

Of its 10 nominations, Notte prima degli esami (lit. “Night Before the Exams”), the surprise box office hit of the season, took home only one David: Best Debut Filmmaker for Fausto Brizzi.

The third time around as a nominee was a charm for Valeria Golino, who won the Best Actress Award for La guerra di Mario (lit. “Mario’s War”) by Antonio Capuano. The film also won the Torino Film Commission Award. Don't Tell [+see also:

film profile], however, won in only one of the six categories in which it was nominated, with Angela Finocchiaro picking up the Best Supporting Actress Award.

The Best European Union film was deemed to be Match Point by Woody Allen, produced by BBC Films while Crash by Paul Haggis was chosen as Best Foreign Film.
