PRODUCTION France

Arthur Rimbaud for François Dupeyron

by

Rectangle will be the company to produce Les jours fragiles (literally, "Fragile Days"), the next feature from François Dupeyron, on celebrated poet Arthur Rimbaud. Adapted from the novel by Philippe Besson (author of His Brother, which Patrice Chéreau made into a film), Les jours fragiles will star Julie and Guillaume Depardieu. While the rights to the book were acquired by Gérard Depardieu and Claude Berri, the project was initially announced at ARP in May, and in June received a promise of an advance on receipts from the National Film Centre without, however, a production company attached to the project. Edouard Weil and Rectangle finally picked up the film, with Gaumont co-producing and acquiring international sales rights. Shooting is scheduled to begin in June 2006.

Besson’s novel retraces the period in Rimbaud’s life after he was repatriated from Africa to Marseille, gravely ill and with an amputated leg. The unspoken things by Isabelle (based on her Christian compassion), the poet’s provocations as he dreams of Africa and makes shocking confessions to his sister (who has remained celibate) and the violent outbursts as death approaches inexorably all promise a profound exploration of a head-on confrontation that is both emotional and venomous. Les jours fragiles will be the eighth feature from Dupeyron, who found success most notably with Officer's Ward (2001) and Monsieur Ibrahim [+see also:
