RELEASES Spain

Five European films in theatres

by

Two Spanish titles, one intimate French film, a co-production between Italy, France and Germany and a British animated feature are the five European offerings opening this week on the Spanish screens.

Otros días vendrán, the first Spanish release, marks the return of Cecília Roth, in the role of a high-school teacher whose messy love life is based on relationships begun in internet chatrooms. "Cinema doesn't approach often enough the theme of mature love, as much as it does first love. An adult passion is far more complex and difficult to tell, but Eduard did a good job", said the actress. Second feature by Eduard Cortés, after La vida de nadie (2002), Otros días vendrán is a Enrique Cerezo P.C. production, distributed by Alta Films, opening in almost 100 film theatres.

"I am not fond of spectacular film; I’d rather speak about people's inner world", confesses Juan Pinzás, scriptwriter and director of El Desenlace. The film focuses on a director and an attractive producer with an obscure past, who decides to make a film based on the last novel by Rosendo Carballo, a famous writer who abandoned his wife to start a new life with a younger gay man. Starring José Sancho, Beatriz Rico, Javier Gurruchaga and Carlos Bardem, El Desenlace completes the triology "Dogma in Spain", whose first two titles are Érase una vez (2000) and Días de Boda (2002), also directed by the Galician filmmaker. Distributed by Cine Indie Group, El Desenlace is produced by Atlántico Filmes, which also handles the international sales.

Added to those two national titles come three other productions from the old continent. From France comes Maurice Barthélémy's Papa, a film about the relationship between a father and his little son. Produced by Gaumont, Les Films de la Suane and TPS Star, the film is distributed by EuroCine Films. In a different register but still focused on family, Filmax releases Gianni Amelio's Le chiavi di casa. Starring Kim Rossi Stuart, Charlotte Rampling and Andrea Rossi, the film deals with the relationship between a father and his handicapped daughter, whom he didn’t meet until she was a teenager.
