Drop in tickets for 2005

by

13,2% fewer spectators compared to the first eight months of 2004: results for 2005 in French cinemas registered a net drop. According to figures published this week by the National Film Centre (CNC), admissions in France totalled 115,46 million for January to August 2005 against the 133 million during the same period in 2004. A drop amplified by the summer period which began with an massive fall to –32% in June, followed by two average months –9,6% in July and –14,5% in August. However, if you take out the record figures achieved in 2004, admissions for 2005 remain superior to the same period for 2003 (around 110 million spectators for the eight first months of the year).

from the Larrieu brothers (400 000 spectators in two weeks - Pyramide). The crushing domination by American production during July-August brought the US market share to 53,6% in 2005 against 48,7% for the first eight months of 2004. This cinema duel between France and its competitor from over the pond leaves little room for films by other nationalities which represent only 8,5% of tickets for 2005 against 16,8% for the same period in 2004.
