“Each of the directors nominated deserved to win.” Spain’s Pedro Almodovar who swept the board at this year's EFAs with five important victories, was generous in his acceptance speech. As was Italy’s Sergio Castellitto, winner of the best actor prize, “When you are given an award, it also goes to all the people who worked with you. So thank-you, everyone.”
Presenting Britain's Ken Loach with the European critics' Fipresci award, actress Ariane Ascaride said, “Ken Loach gives a voice to those who don't have one either in cinema or in the real world.” With typically English humour Loach joked that "showing your film to the critics is like a lamppost awaiting the approaching dogs."
