FESTIVALS Belgium

A very European gathering

by

A third new formula for the Brussels European Film Festival will unfold at the start of the summer, from the 1st to the 9th of July. This morning, the two directors of the Festival, Jan de Clerq (producer and distributor through his company Lumière) and Dominique Janne (producer at K2 Productions) presented their plans to the press. A total of 27 films, many previews and events confirmed the new direction of the festival which has changed dates, moving to summer to show films that would previously not be available because they were kept under wraps until Cannes. Another change, the festival is teaming up with an event organised by the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique, during the same period, called Ciné-Découvertes, which celebrates its thirtieth year and which offers the chance to discover first films from countries world-wide.

This morning, the press screening of the Norwegian film i>Hawaii, Oslo by Erik Poppe, kicks of a programme that has a definite Scandinavian feel (Dalecarlians by Maria Blom, Dark Horse by Dagur Kari, Babylon Disease by Daniel Espinosa), King Games by Nikolaj Arcel which opens the official festival. The festival’s closing film is Douches Froides by Frenchman Anthony Cordier, with fellow French films Les Yeux Clairs by Jérôme Bonnell and La petit Jérusalem by Karin Albou. The festival also offers a geopolitical panorama of Europe, demonstrating the strength of the North against the South, absent apart from Italy (Vento di Terra de Vincenzo Marra). There is also a strong Eastern European presence (Tulipane from Pole Jacek Borcuch, the powerful documentary from Czechs Filip Remunda and Vit Klusák, Czech Dream and Days and Hours by Pjer Zalica from Bosnia-Herzegovina). Belgium has also been dynamic, with the world premiere of the eagerly awaited new feature by Vincent Lannoo, Ordinary Man, and the screening of three documentaries from the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF): Drie Vrouwen, 1 rit – voyage, Je ne voyage pas, je rêve. Several soirées have been organised by the Belgian French-speaking Community, which will be preceded by the Cineuropa press conference, another by Media Desk Belgium (French and Dutch) and also the 30th anniversary of Cinéart.
