FESTIVALS France

Eastern Films in the city of light

by

Tonight, the 2d Baltyk O Balkan, the Parisian festival dedicated to Eastern European cinema, will start at the Cinéma des Cinéastes theatre. This year, until the 26th of April, this event supported by one of the most influential professional organisations in the French film industry, the ARP (which gathers many authors, directors, and producers), will present, in competition, six features from Hungary, Estonia, Serbia, Romania, Turkey, and Slovaquia. Out of competition, the public will be able to (re)discover some classics by well-known directors such as, for instance, Lucian Pintilie (Romania) and Krzysztof Kieslowski (Poland), as well as more recent works (including Salut Tereska by Robert Glinski, 2001, Poland) and a series of Estonian animation films.

The first film in competition, Waiting for the Clouds (2004-Turkey) will be screened tonight, for the opening, in the presence of its director, Yesim Ustaoglu. Amongst the other contenders, several films have already been granted prizes, as have Dealer by Benedek Fliegauf (2004-Hungary) and La révolution des cochons by Jaak Kilmi and Rene Reinumagi (2004-Estonia), which will be brought to Paris by the producer Katrin Kissa herself. The other films in competition are Le camion gris de couleur rouge by Srdjan Koljevic (2004–Serbia), Examen by Titus Munteanu (2003–Romania), and 66 Seasons by Peter Kererkes (2003–Slovaquia). The festival and the official selection are definitely aimed at helping to promote a cinema for which finding distributors in France is particularly difficult at the moment.
