BOX OFFICE France

National cinema rules

by

With 47% of the market since the beginning of 2005, French productions stay ahead of American films (42% of the admissions). This great result is owed to several comedies : Iznogoud by Patrick Braoudé starring Michael Youn which sold over 1,8 million tickets in two weeks (TFM Distribution ), Espace Détente (1,5 million admissions in three weeks - ARP Sélection), and L'ex femme de ma vie by Josiane Balasko (780 000 admissions –Warner Distribution). Art films, despite the fact that fewer copies were distributed, have contributed to the success of national cinema ; Le Promeneur du Champ de Mars by Robert Guédiguian attracted 210 000 spectators on its first week (with 156 copies circulated by Pathé Distribution, it got the best average number of spectators per screen). EuropaCorp, however, had a slight disappointment with only 700 000 admissions in three weeks for Danny The Dog, while recent releases such as La marche de l’empereur (1,3 million spectators in four weeks - BVI Distribution),Le dernier trappeur (2 million tickets-TFM), and Les sœurs fâchées (which leaves the screen after being shown to 1,4 million spectators -Pan Européenne) kept attracting more public.

As far as European cinema is concerned, it has represented 7% of the market so far in 2005, mostly due to the German film La chute by Oliver Hirschbiegel (800 000 tickets in seven weeks – TFM). The French and British production Pollux and the Magic Carrousel (600 000 spectators in three weeks- Pathé) should not be overlooked, nor should the 460 000 tickets sold since the beginning of the year by Bridget Jones 2 [+see also:

(which makes a total of 2,1 million admissions since its release on the 12th of December 2004 -Mars Distribution ). Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake [+see also:

sold (140 copies-UGC Distribution). Let’s also point out that À corps perdu by Sergio Castellitto (EuropaCorp Distribution) was a total diappointment (32 000 tickets in two weeks, while The Consequences of Love by Paolo Sorrentino started modestly a carrier which appears to be brilliant (22 copies- Océan Films) with 12 000 spectators in France, 6500 of which in only four cinemas in Paris, which is a very good average number of spectators per screen..
