After two years of work, principal photography for Igor Bezinović’s second feature, Fiume o morte!, wrapped in early July. The project is now moving into the post-production phase, which should, according to predictions, last over a year, while the premiere is expected for autumn 2023.

Named after the protofascist political slogan, Fiume o morte! is a docu-fiction hybrid aimed at reconstructing the events during Gabriele D’Annunzio’s rule over Fiume (now Rijeka in Croatia), which lasted from 1919-1920. While the historical facts and D’Annunzio’s worldview are widely known and well publicised, Bezinović’s film is aimed more at showing the contrasts between the strict, corporativist régime and some of the avant-garde, libertine and anarchistic ideas it proclaimed. A Rijeka native, Bezinović wanted to explore and rediscover the lesser-known parts of the city’s history from over a century ago.

His subsequent feature, A Brief Excursion [+see also:

(2017), premiered at Rotterdam to positive critical reception and went on to win a number of awards, both internationally and domestically, including the Grand Golden Arena at Pula.

The cast of Fiume o morte! hails from the ranks of non-professionals from Rijeka, while the crew comprises cinematographer Gregor Božič (known for his directorial work on the 2019 feature Stories from the Chestnut Woods [+see also:

), editor Hrvoslava Brkušić (who collaborated with Bezinović on both The Blockade and A Brief Excursion) and sound designer Julij Zornik. Filming took place in a number of locations in Croatia (Rijeka and the surrounding area), Slovenia (the Carso region) and Italy (Trieste and Gardone).

Fiume o morte! is being produced by Tibor Keser and Vanja Jambrović for Restart (Croatia). The co-producers are Erica Berbiani and Lucia Candelpergher for Videomante (Italy) as well as Marina Gumzi for Nosorogi (Slovenia). The development and production were also financially supported by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Slovenian Film Centre, the City of Zagreb, the City of Rijeka, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Fund, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission, Eurimages, Creative Europe – MEDIA Single Project Development, the Italian Ministry of Culture, PROCIREP/ANGOA, RE-ACT and the Sarajevo Film Festival (CineLink Co-production Market), while Viba Film Studio provided the technical services.
