The feature, based on a true story, follows a young couple sailing around the world with their little son in the 1980s: head over heels in love, not a care in the world, full of dreams. But in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, everything changes, and their worst nightmare comes true. The abrupt end to the journey sparks inner conflicts, and their desperate attempts to survive drive them apart. Forty years later, the former lovers meet again, and time has clearly not healed all of their wounds. The main cast members are Sallie Harmsen (playing young Johanna), Elsie de Brauw (portraying older Johanna), Reinout Scholten van Aschat (young Lucas) and Gijs Scholten van Aschat (old Lucas and Reinout's real-life father).

“We’re very honoured that Sea of Time is opening the Netherlands Film Festival. Theu Boermans and his team have made a compelling film from Marieke van der Pol’s brilliant script, and we can’t wait for the public to see it,” said Maarten Swart, producer at Kaap Holland.

Festival director Silvia van der Heiden added: “Sea of Time is a superbly exciting drama with an amazing cast. Everyone involved, from camera operators to sound designers, has done a fantastic job. This is an opening film that will touch a lot of hearts.”

Sea of Time is being produced by Kaap Holland Film and Eyeworks Film & TV Drama, in co-operation with KRO-NCRV and Dutch FilmWorks. It is supported by the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive, the CoBO Fund, the Flanders Audiovisual Fund and the Stichting Abraham Tuschinski Fonds. The film will world-premiere on 21 September, whilst its domestic release is slated for 13 October. Its international sales have been entrusted to DFW International.
