On 22 May, nine European public funds will officially launch the “New Dawn” fund at Cannes’ Marché du Film (17-25 May). The primary aim of the joint effort (see the news) is to increase diversity in the international film industry. In detail, with the introduction of New Dawn, the participating funds wish to “explore more ways to establish variety and representation”, and to guarantee “a vibrant, open and inclusive film industry with true diversity of perspectives”.

Moreover, it strives “to expand the international opportunities for the many voices and perspectives in our continuously changing societies, as a joint step forward towards a more diverse film landscape”.

“As a film industry, it is our joint responsibility to reflect a kaleidoscopic picture of the societies we live in, instead of reducing humanity to a singular story. The New Dawn initiative aims to create room for diversity in artistic expression, thereby enriching the complete ecosystem of the film industry,” said Dutch filmmaker Shamira Raphaëla, also chair of the advisory committee of New Dawn.

New Dawn is inviting filmmakers as well as other public funds to contribute to its mission. For the time being, New Dawn will operate as a production fund, by making additional funding available for film productions and by supporting filmmakers in setting up networks. The fund is set to provide up to €200,000 for fiction/animated featuresand up to €100,000 for a feature-length documentary. This year’s budget is €900,000. A joint advisory committee of independent international advisers will be responsible for the assessment of applications. The first submission deadline is 27 June 2022.

The nine funds backing the initiative are the Communauté française de Belgique - Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel, the Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Film Fund Luxembourg, the Finnish Film Foundation, the Norwegian Film Institute, the Swedish Film Institute, Screen Ireland, Instituto Português do Cinema e do Audiovisual and the Netherlands Film Fund.
