For the second year running, the Berlinale Co-Production Market will be held online, with the aim being to limit physical contact in the current circumstances. The 19th edition of the market has invited along 34 new feature-film projects hailing from 32 countries, and they will be presented from 12-16 February 2022. The producers of the projects will meet with potential international co-producers, world sales agents, TV broadcasters, fund representatives, streaming platforms and distributors, as well as other financing partners from all over the world, following last year’s successful concept. The Berlinale Co-Production Market is an integral part of the European Film Market, which will also run online from 10-17 February.

, in 2020, and won the Golden Bear in the Berlinale Competition last year. In 2022, Jude is returning to the Berlinale Co-Production Market with his new project. Some of the other upcoming projects included this year are those by Agnieszka Holland, Burhan Qurbani, Sophie Hyde, Bence Fliegauf, Teona Mitevska, Nariman Aliev, Nathalie Álvarez-Mesén, Carlo Sironi, Milagros Mumenthaler, Ognjen Glavonić and Ivan Ostrochovský.

Martina Bleis, head of the Berlinale Co-Production Market, commented: “This time around, biographies of a special kind are a focus that particularly caught our eye during the selection process. A wide range of narrative approaches is used, from hybrid and collage-like to satirical, and that makes these projects particularly exciting. But purely fictional stories, from horror to comedy, won't be missing out, either. As with the many highly successful projects of recent years – for example, Quo Vadis, Aida? [+see also:

by Juho Kuosmanen or Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn – we hope to give 2022's projects a real boost on their way to cinema screens and audiences.”

For the official programme of the market, 19 projects, budgeted at between €500,000 and €6 million, have been selected from among the 295 submitted, with most of them being European productions. In addition, there are four projects in the early stages of financing in the “Berlinale Directors” section, whose directors – Burhan Qurbani, Udita Bhargava, Radu Jude, and Iranian duo Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha – have already shown successful films at the festival. by Koji Fukada will be looking for partners as part of the “Rotterdam-Berlinale Express” at both IFFR’s CineMart and the Berlinale Co-Production Market. It should be noted that the percentage of female directors remains high in these projects, standing at almost 49%.

The selection is rounded off by the ten projects (from among 135 submissions) being presented at the Talent Project Market, which is taking place in collaboration with Berlinale Talents, where up-and-coming producers will have a chance to showcase their projects and will also be on the lookout for international partners.

The selection for Co-Pro Series will be announced soon.
