(selected for various festivals, including the Berlinale Forum in 2014), Brighton 4th (which is based upon a screenplay by Boris Frumin) homes in on Kakhi, a former wrestling champion whose devotion to his family leads him to leave his home in Tbilissi to pay a visit to his son Soso in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. He finds him in a shabby boarding house, populated by a colourful group of Georgian immigrants. Soso isn’t studying medicine, as Kakhi believed, but is instead working for a removals firm in order to pay back the gambling debt he owes a local mob boss. Kakhi takes it upon himself to help his son, which results in situations as comical as they are catastrophic… Levan Tediashvili, Kakhi Kavsadze, Nadezhda Mikhalkova and Giorgi Tabidze all stand out in the cast.

Brighton 4th is produced by Kino Iberica, Moskvich Films and TatoFilm, (uniting the likes of Georgia, Russia, Bulgaria, Monaco and the USA) in co-production with Art Fest, Broken Cage Studio, the Georgian National Film Centre, Give Me Liberty Mfg. and KNM. Following its premiere in New York, the film will be shown within the Pre-Cannes Screenings which will take place online from 21 to 25 June, courtesy of the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film.

On the subject of Cannes, Loco Films were on the receiving end of some very good news yesterday, upon the revelation of the films selected for the 53rd Directors’ Fortnight (running 7 to 17 July, within the 74th Cannes Film Festival), which include another title from the sales agent’s line-up: The Hill Where Lionesses Roar [+see also:

, which is the first feature film to be directed by French-Kosovar actress Luàna Bajrami. Previously chosen for the Les Arcs Film Festival’s Work in Progress initiative, the film opens in a small and remote village somewhere in Kosovo, where three young women’s dreams and ambitions are consistently quashed. But nothing will stop them in their quest for independence: it’s time to let the lionesses roar… Produced by Kosovar company Örëzanë Films alongside French firms Vents contraires and Acajou Productions, this feature film will be distributed in France by Le Pacte.

Likewise worth a mention in the Loco Films line-up is Polish director Maciej Barczewski’s movie The Champion [+see also:

(revolving around a boxing champion sent to Auschwitz, where he rallies a group of rebellious deportees), which will be released in French cinemas in September but which will also be showcased within the Pre-Cannes Screenings.
