This year’s awards season has finally come to an end with the ceremony of the 93rd Academy Awards, two months later than originally planned due to pandemic restrictions and the deceleration of film releases. Produced by director Steven Soderbergh, among others, the gala taking place in Los Angeles (which was something of a polemic due to its format and because, for the first time in recent years, it did not end with the Best Picture announcement) managed to celebrate the crop of this difficult year.

Rather unsurprisingly, Chloé Zhao’s Golden Lion winner Nomadland triumphed, taking home the awards for Best Picture, Best Director (marking only the second time in history that this award has gone to a female filmmaker) and Best Actress for Frances McDormand.

Another expected moment was Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round [+see also:

receiving the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. This rounds off a brilliant run for the Danish-Swedish-Dutch co-production, one that included both Denmark’s Robert awards (news) and European Film Awards (read news) sweeps, a César win (news) and a BAFTA win (news), in the lead-up to the LUX Award, for which the film is nominated (news). Also nominated in the Best Director category, Vinterberg was again responsible for one of the most touching moments of the ceremony, dedicating the win to his daughter Ida, who passed away in a car accident during the film’s shoot. The director expressed, "We wanted to make a film that celebrates life. Four days into shooting, the impossible happened. We ended up making this movie for Ida, as a monument. This is a miracle, and you are part of this miracle."

The other big European winner of the night, Florian Zeller’s The Father [+see also:

, celebrated wins for Best Adapted Screenplay (for Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton) and Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins, who therefore become the oldest Best Actor winner, at 83 years old. The first two accepted the award from Paris and London, respectively. In the words of Zeller, "I wrote the script for Anthony Hopkins, to me he’s the greatest living actor, it was a dream to work with him." The actor himself was absent from the ceremony.

Two other UK-USA co-productions, Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman [+see also:

, received one Oscar each, for Best Original Screenplay and Best Visual Effects, respectively. The night brought into the limelight another Danish-born winner, Mikkel E.G. Nielsen, who bagged the Oscar for Best Editing for his work in US title Sound of Metal.

Unfortunately, the double nomination of Alexander Nanau’s documentary Collective [+see also:
